An Honor and a Privilege

Yesterday I was able to do something I've never done before. I helped coach my sister-in-law through childbirth. Her husband was there, too, supporting and coaching. Of course, my s-i-l did all the real work and I was incredibly proud of her. I've given birth three times, so I knew what I was in for, but I had never before been in the room when someone else was having a baby. It was a wonderful experience. I'm thinking maybe I missed my calling when I studied to be a high school English teacher. Perhaps I should have been a nurse, doctor, or midwife. It's too late for that now, sigh! I'm too old to go back to school, and don't want to anyway...so I'm glad I got to experience what I did yesterday.

Baby John was born late in the afternoon, and I was literally in tears at the beauty of childbirth, the miracle of the infant emerging into the world. What an amazing thing it is to see the baby for the first time, and to see the joy of his parents at meeting him, finally, outside the womb. I'm so happy for my sister-and-brother-in-law. God has blessed them with a second child. I was blessed to be there with them.

It would be so awesome to experience this. You know what's so funny is that just the other day I was thinking that if I could I would become a doctor, preferably a pediatrician. I think I am probably too old, but I also think that if I didn't already have an awesome job and responsibility (homeschool mom)I would actually pursue it, no matter how long it might take. I think I could do it and would feel such a sense of accomplishment. Mary (P.S. Love you Alice. And you know you could do it, too!! We could go into practice together!)

You're right, Mary. It would be fun to practice together. I don't think I would do pediatrics, though. I've actually looked into it, and to become a Certified Nurse Midwife takes about five years. Only 11 states accept midwives that are only Licensed. All states accept CNMs. It involves getting an RN plus Midwifery. Who knows--I'll be fifty when Bobby leaves for college. I suppose I could do it then. The other option would be to go to Physician's Assistant school (two years) and then work in an Ob/Gyn office. Oh well...I'll definitely keep these options open. Love you very much! Alice

What an amazing blessing. This is a career I have thought about a lot. I think it would be a wonderful job...I have looked at becoming a midwife as well. Congrats to all of the family on the new baby!

Congratulations, It is a wonderful blessing to be apart of that absolutely miracle. I know that your sister-in-law has waited along time for this. Two boys, double the blessing.

You would of been a perfect midwife, wish you had been here for Hannah's birth. You would of been wonderful to have in the delivery room with us.

Miss ya,

Have you looked into becoming a doula?

Oh, another thing, I have a suggestion for a name for your practice: Ciao Babe ;-)

Nicole: I wish I could have been there, too! Your family is beautiful. Hope we can see y'all some time. Love you.

Renata: A perfect name! And I actually have looked into the doula training, too. I was just talking to Jamie Irwin about that today. Becoming a doula is actually much more feasible. Love you!

Renata: Or should it be "Ciao, baby, what up?"

Alice,
I too had that experience with my nephew being born in February. It is a wonderful experience. To see God's blessings first hand. I know that it is a memory that you will cherish forever.

Babe sounds more biblical, because you don't see baby in the King James ;-)
But you could add the 'what up' when you answer the phone.

Hi Alice
I just wanted to say hello. This is Mildred (Rivera), Mary's classmate of Wesleyan. I had connected with Mary and was praying for your family and your son and so glad to hear he is well. I became aware of your blogspot-- I think through the CarePages which Mary connected me with. Anyway, I really enjoy reading your blogspot on occasion and agree with so much of it. I had 3 C sections but was able to be at the birth of one of my best friends' children, and it was a blessing. I live in Minnesota now. I have 3 children and a wonderful Chtn. husband. Wesleyan and the ministry of the teachers there, including your parents, have left a wonderful legacy in my life. I have sweet memories of my friendship with Mary. Well I'll talk more in another blog. I would be interested to hear sometime in your blog how growing as a missionary kid and in the culture of Puerto Rico has helped or shaped your life. Blessings, Mildred

Hola, Mildred, so nice to have you comment on here. Thanks for your prayers for our family, especially for Bobby. So you live in Minnesota now, huh? Do you have trouble with the winters there? I had some real trouble adjusting to winter in Houghton when I was in college. Georgia is a lot more like PR. I also really like your idea of the bi-cultural upbringing as a topic for my blog. That's something I haven't written about, and yet it has been a major shaping factor in my life. Hope we can be in touch more.

Que Dios te bendiga, Alice
